A Carteret County man told authorities he was kidnapped and robbed. Authorities said that man was lying.
The Jacksonville Daily News reported 57-year-old Dean Hardesty was arrested Friday for making a false report to police.
Investigators said Hardesty claimed that after a man and woman came into his house, they held a knife to his throat, and demanded money. Hardesty then said the man used his stolen money to send funds using the MoneyGram service provided by Walmart.
Deputies were suspicious. They went to the local Walmart, where surveillance video showed Hardesty himself making the transaction and wiring $260 to a man in Florida.
Authorities believed the suspect was trying to double his money. He was arrested but has since been released, on bond from jail.
