With the start of hurricane season just weeks away, local emergency managers and weather experts are getting ready.
North Carolina Emergency Management partnered with East Carolina University to host the second annual Hurricane Conference on-campus Wednesday at the Murphy Center.
Meteorologists and researchers reviewed some of the latest tools, models, and trends in hurricane forecasting, like river flooding and storm surge, which is often the greatest threat to life and property to communities along the coast.
One of the goals of the conference was to help decision-makers in our area understand available hurricane forecasting tools that have improved over the years.
"Over the past decade or so, we've had a lot more things to come on-line that have helped us with our forecasting. We have a lot of new models that we look at when we're making the forecast. And those are always improving," said Robbie Berg, a hurricane specialist with the National Hurricane Center.
The Atlantic Hurricane Season officially begins June 1st and ends November 30th.
