A mother whose daughter was allegedly sexually assaulted at school must now decide what to do if the suspect is allowed to return to classes.
Trevonte Koonce, 16, allegedly held down then sexually assaulted a 16-year-old female classmate at New Bern High School.
The alleged incident happened in a stairwell in late September.
Police arrested Koonce the same day.
He’s charged with sexual battery and indecent exposure, both misdemeanors.
The girl's mother says the suspect was initially suspended for ten days, and the mother is now waiting to see if Koonce be allowed back at school or will be suspended for the rest of the year.
The mother is speaking out about the anxiety involved in waiting on the school’s decision.
“That's something I hope she doesn't have to endure,” the mother said, speaking about the prospect of her daughter seeing her alleged attacker at school. NewsChannel 12 isn’t identifying the mother in order to not identify the daughter.
The alleged victim told a reporter that she had no prior involvement with Koonce and that she didn't know him aside from the fact that he attended school with her.
The mother said she’ll remove her daughter from NBHS if Koonce is allowed to return to school.
The school's policy is not to comment on student disciplinary actions.
But Craven County Schools Superintendent Dr. Lane Mills released a statement to Newschanel 12 that says, in part:
“Student safety is a top priority in our school system. Immediate disciplinary action was taken on a student regarding an incident that took place at New Bern High School on September 27, 2012. The disciplinary action is still pending…”
NewsChannel 12 was not able to reach Koonce for comment; the landlord at his listed address said his family recently moved from the location.
Authorities arrested a New Bern High School student who allegedly sexually assaulted a female student in a school stairwell.
Trevonte Larenz Koonce, 16, is accused of forcibly exposing himself to a 16-year-old female student after following her into a stairwell at New Bern High School, according to court documents.
The alleged incident happened last Thursday during school hours.
Koonce is charged with sexual battery and indecent exposure, both misdemeanors. He is being charged as an adult.
School district policy is to not comment on any disciplinary measures taken against a student.
In an attempt to hear the suspect's side, a reporter visited Koonce's last known address; the landlord said his family recently moved from the residence and did not leave a forwarding address.
