A Newport man allegedly set fire to a home and stabbed a person who lived there.
Newport Police and Fire responded to 2530 E. Forest Dr. for a report of a structure fire at around midnight Tuesday morning. There they found a home on fire and a victim with multiple stab wounds.
One of the people who lived at the home, 26-year-old Jesse Lewis Cox, was arrested.
Officers said there was an altercation between Cox and the other people living in the house before the fire started. Cox then allegedly set fire to the home while the other occupants were sleeping. After the home had been set on fire, the victim got into a fight with Cox. The victim was stabbed 5 to 7 times with a kitchen knife.
The victim was transported to Carteret General Hospital for treatment. A 3-week old baby was also transported to the hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. Two dogs that were inside the home perished in the fire.
Fire crews contained the fire. No nearby buildings were damaged.
Police officers have responded to the home on at least 7 different occasions in the last two years for domestic issues, threats, and drunk and disorderly conduct.
Bond is set for Cox at $800,000.
