Renewed Arctic blast brings wintry trouble for Friday

Fresh Arctic air being delivered this afternoon will create travel trouble for Friday afternoon.
A second Arctic cold front will drop across eastern Carolina this afternoon. You will surely notice when that front moves through as the temperatures will drop and gusty winds will increase when it passes.
Overnight tonight another Canadian high pressure will settle over the Delmarva and will cause temperatures to start out Friday morning in the upper teens across the inland areas. This will make problems Friday afternoon as a storm system currently in the northern Rockies tracks eastward today and slam into this dense Arctic air entrenched over Eastern North Carolina by Friday afternoon.
Warmer air coming in above the surface will eventually work down to the ground by Friday evening. However when and where that happens will make a big difference in what type of precipitation falls in your back yard.
Here is how I see this unfolding. Initially, we will see it start off in the late afternoon hours on Friday as a brief burst of snow. But south and east of a Kenansville to Washington to Plymouth line it will quickly switch over to a cold rain.
Just north of that line through Kinston to Greenville to Williamston there will be an hour or two of prolonged sleet and freezing rain with minor ice accumulations on mainly cars and bridges before we switch over to a cold rain.
It is further north of that from Mount Olive through Goldsboro into Tarboro that the colder air will hold longest at the lower levels. This means the potential for sleet and freezing rain to last through the Friday night commute and could make traveling hazardous.
The positive thing about this storm is that it will be a fast moving one. The precipitation will be off the coast by midnight and hardly a cloud will be in the sky by sunrise Saturday.
Stay with StormTrack12 as we continue to track the progress of this pending winter storm and alert you to the dangers it will bring.
