According to the National Stroke Association, a stroke is caused by an interruption or reduction in blood supply to a person’s brain.
The Mayo Clinic states that different types of disruptions to the brain’s blood supply can result in different types of strokes.
A blocked artery can cause an ischemic stroke; a leaking or burst blood vessel can cause a hemorrhagic stroke; and a temporary change in blood flow can cause a transient ischemic attack.
Certain health conditions can increase a person’s risk of suffering from a stroke. Some of these include: high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol.
