Your Primary Doctor

One of the most important people to have on your team when you have diabetes is your primary doctor. He or she may be the first person to recommend you be tested for diabetes. Once you are a confirmed diabetic, you have to undergo a series of tests. First, you must have your blood pressure tested, then your cholesterol. If needed, your primary doctor can refer you to other resources such as a diabetes specialist or a dietician.

Endocrinologists

An endocrinologist is a doctor that specializes in treating disorders within the endocrine system, which includes diabetes. Often referred to as the “diabetes doctor,” endocrinologists are a great resource for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics. According to the Hormone Health Network, endocrinologists help diabetics who are in need of medications or insulin. Without it, diabetics are at risk of developing problems with their liver, kidneys and nerves.

Dietician

Maintaining a healthy diet is crucial to a diabetic. In order to stay healthy, a diabetic must include foods rich in calcium, potassium, magnesium and vitamins A, C and E in each of their meals. For many, it is a challenge to find foods and prepare meals that include all of these supplements. As a result, it is recommended that diabetics seek the assistance of a dietician. Once diagnosed with diabetes, your eating habits may have to drastically change. A dietician can help you prepare and serve nutritious food.

Trainer

Since exercise is extremely important for diabetics to stay healthy, some doctors may recommend you get a gym pass or a personal trainer. Trainers will design a custom workout just for you. As your fitness progresses, they may alter or boost your program. Working out will keep you in shape and healthy.
