Man's trial in Duke student death stays in Durham
A judge has refused to move the murder trial of a man already serving a life sentence for killing the University of North Carolina student body president in 2008.
A lawyer for 23-year-old Laurence Lovette said there had been too much publicity about his client for him to get a fair trial in Durham County for the killing of a Duke University graduate student Abhijit Mahato.
Mahato was found shot in the head in his Durham apartment in January 2008, less than two months before authorities say Lovette killed UNC-Chapel Hill student body president Eve Carson during a robbery. Lovette is serving a life sentence after he was convicted in Carson's death.
The judge also announced Wednesday that Lovette's trial in Mahato's death will start in July.
