A $5,000 diamond meant for a ring or necklace ended up in the stomach of an 80-year-old Florida woman instead.
The Tampa Women's Club poured 400 flutes of champagne at a charity event last weekend. Each glass held a cubic zirconia, but one contained a $5,000 diamond donated by a local jeweler, Tampa TV station WFTS reported.
One of the attendees, a woman named Miriam who declined to give her last name, was laughing with friends when she took a swallow.
As others finished their drinks, organized realized the real diamond was nowhere to be found.
Andrew Meyer, a partner at Continental Wholesale Diamond, told WFTS they were going from table to table when Miriam approached them and said she thought she had swallowed something.
An X-ray produced nothing, since diamonds can't be seen on X-rays, but doctors found the gem during Miriam's routine colonoscopy the next day.
She's decided to keep the diamond in the family.
