The mother of two children from Onslow County killed in an Alabama crash is recovering at a burn center, the victims' family told NewsChannel 12.
Labricia Hodges, 30, was seriously injured in the five-vehicle wreck in southwest Alabama Sunday night, and remained in a burn center as of Tuesday, a family member said. But two of Hodge's children, 7-year-old Naziya Gillis and 9-year-old Nadir Gillis, were killed in the crash, according to the Highway Patrol.
The wreck also injured 28-year-old Isom Hodges, troopers said. He is the husband of Labricia and the stepfather of the two deceased children, according to family.
Isom, a Marine staff sergeant, had previously lived at Camp Lejeune with Labricia and the two kids. But the family had recently transferred to a base in Mobile, Ala., said the children's uncle.
Troopers said the wreck happened at about 10:50 p.m. Sunday, when Isom was driving a Dodge Challenger with Labricia and the two children as the passengers. While the vehicle was traveling on Interstate 65, about 3 miles south of Atmore, Ala., it was struck by a tractor-trailer, investigators said.
The wreck involved five total vehicles, said troopers. In addition to the Hodges family, also injured in the wreck was 42-year-old William Rousey of Lexington, Ky., who was driving another car.
No other driver, including the truck driver, were hurt, said investigators.
Troopers said they were still investigating what caused the five-vehicle wreck that tied up traffic for several hours. As of Tuesday, no charges had been filed.
According to Labricia's Facebook page, the family was returning home from visiting loved ones when the wreck happened.
The Marine Corps told NewsChannel 12 Isom is with a recon battalion in Mobile, Ala. He has been a Marine for almost 10 years.
