OUTER BANKS -

The Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a $20 million contract to do beach renourishment work along the Outer Banks.

Officials said the work north of Rodanthe on Hatteras Island will help protect a vulnerable stretch of N.C. 12, which often suffers washouts during storms.

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co. will use two dredges to speed work on the project, which is scheduled to be completed by mid-September. The schedule depends on the weather.

North Carolina Transportation Secretary Tony Tata says he's happy for the repair work to protect coastal roads in the area.

The Federal Highway Administration approved Hurricane Sandy emergency relief funds to pay for the work.
