Abortion bills could drive wedge in NC GOP

Published On: Apr 21 2013 03:15:20 PM CDT

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Abortion rights-advocates and political observers say state bills to add new restrictions to abortion could set up a confrontation between lawmakers and Gov. Pat McCrory.

The Republican-led General Assembly has introduced a number of abortion-related bills this session. The most recent bills would broaden protections for medical professionals who refuse to participate in an abortion and add new penalties for doctors who perform the procedure when it's motivated by the sex of the child.

Republican McCrory said in the last debate of his successful 2012 campaign that he wouldn't sign any new laws restricting abortion.

The legislature overrode a veto from former Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue in 2011 to enact a law adding wait times, counseling and ultrasounds to abortion requirements.
