RALEIGH -

State Representative Bill Cook has claimed victory in the North Carolina Senate District 1 race.

The Beaufort County republican won the November 6 election by 31 votes, out of more than 87,000 cast.

A recount confirmed Cook's victory over democrat Stan White.

"The votes have been counted and recounted and I have won again. I see no point in my opponent attempting to continue this race and I call on him to concede the contest," said Cook.

"I am grateful for the continued support from the voters and my GOP colleagues that helped observe this recount. The result has not changed and I look forward to representing the citizens of Senate District 1 in the upcoming term."

Recounts in the eight counties making up the district saw Cook's victory stand up.

Cook ran for the NC Senate after serving one term in the NC House.

Democratic senate leader Marc Basnight held the seat for more than 20 years until his resignation last year.
