Bill calls for armed school volunteers

A bill filed Thursday in the North Carolina Senate calls for armed volunteers to guard schools.

The guards would be designated "school safety marshals."

Citizens could apply for the position, and would be required to take a course designed by a state commission.

Individual school districts would decide who would qualify to work in their district, and districts would decide whether or not the marshals would be paid.

A Craven County retired Marine said he'd volunteer for the position.

"I'd do it to give back," said John Gonzales, who served in the Marines for 30 years.

The proposal is sponsored by a Senator Stan Bingham (R - Davidson).
