CHARLOTTE -

(WSOC) -- Mint Hill police said they found the body of 16-year-old Kayla Campbell early Thursday morning.

Police spent all evening Wednesday draining the pond on Sable-Cap Road, and said they found the girl’s body around 12:15 a.m.

The cause of her death and the circumstances surrounding her death will be the focus of the investigation going forward, police said.

School officials told Channel 9 they have 10 counselors Thursday at Independence High School, where Campbell attended.

Students will wear yellow ribbons Friday in remembrance of the teenager.

Campbell's parents reported her missing after she didn't return home Sunday evening.

On Monday, police found Campbell's cellphone near the pond close to Pumpkin Way Drive, where Campbell's mother said the teen liked to take photos and hang out with friends. Family members said they also found her bike and her helmet.

Mint Hill police detectives and the FBI searched Campbell's phone and contacted as many of her friends and acquaintances as possible to try and learn more about her disappearance.

Dozens of Campbell's friends, neighbors and classmates attended a candlelight vigil Tuesday night near the pond where police found her personal belongings.

Police suspended the search Tuesday evening after they said they had run out of leads in the case. But on Wednesday afternoon, police brought a series of pumps to the pond and began draining it.
