JACKSONVILLE -

Deputies in Onslow County arrested a man they said abused his 5-month-old daughter.

Authorities charged 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Salvador Nunez, of Jacksonville, on Thursday with one count of felony child abuse inflicting serious injury and one count of contributing to a juvenile being abused or neglected.

Investigators believe that Nunez squeezed his daughter until her ribs broke. Deputies believe Nunez did so because the infant wouldn’t stop crying.

During a checkup, it was discovered that the child had fractures on multiple ribs on the right side. Investigators believe that the child received those injuries while at the suspect’s residence off of Brandymill Lane in Jacksonville.

According to court documents, Nunez was arrested on Thursday.  The Magistrate set a $5,000 unsecured bond.  On Friday, NewsChannel 12 found Nunez at home with his wife and infant daughter.

"That makes me really mad," said neighbor Brittany Jones.

Jones has an infant the same age.  "Even if you're unsure if something was done by him," said Jones, "the fact that they're willing to risk that child by putting him around her, I wouldn't be willing."

Two neighbors next door, Tabitha Carreras and Kevin Wilson, stated they did not think Nunez was capable of abusing his infant. "I don't hear the baby screaming or crying or any noises," said Carreras.  "They're very quiet."

According to the North Carolina Department of Corrections website, Nunez has no prior arrest record.  Camp Lejeune officials confirmed that Nunez is assigned to the 2nd Marine Division.  No further details could be released at this time.
