Closer look at murder suspect reveals troubled financial past

A closer look into a murder suspect reveals a troubled financial past.

Rhonda Hagan, 30, is accused of murdering her great aunt, 90-year-old Goldie Hall. According to investigators, the murder happened in a dispute over money Hagan owed Hall.

This is not the first time money has landed Hagan in court.

In 2004, Hagan pleaded guilty to embezzling close to $25,000 from her former employer at Pizza Inn in Morehead City. According to documents, Hagan forged checks in her employer’s name, and then cashed them to herself.

The money was paid off in full in 2010, but there's no documentation of how Hagan was able to come up with the cash. Friends and family of Hall's said Hagan borrowed the money from her great aunt, but couldn't pay it back.

Deputies cannot confirm the connection between the two cases, but property records show Hall had extensive assets and the ability to help her great niece financially.

Hagan's next court appearance is scheduled for Friday.
