NEW BERN -

Construction began Tuesday to replace a water main system on Neuse Boulevard in New Bern.

The city began milling operations to remove the existing asphalt along Neuse Boulevard from First Street and Fort Totten Drive.

The construction is the first part of a nine-month project to replace a 70-year-old water main underneath the road.

Some traffic build-up is expected for people and businesses in the area during the project, according to city officials.

"We've only been open seven months and we're just getting business going," Ava Weatherington, an employee at White's Diner, located, near the fire department, said. The diner opened in March, and Weatherington said she's worried the construction will affect business.

"A lot of people might take the back roads instead of coming through here, so I hope it doesn't hurt us."

The city plans to complete the work in sections on the road to reduce the impact of traffic, Jordan Hughes, city engineer, said.

Hughes said the milling operation will be complete Tuesday afternoon. Utility work is expected to begin as early as this weekend.
