The City of New Bern released Friday that Cracker Barrel Restaurant & Store is not coming to the mall property located at Dr. MLK Jr. Boulevard. City representatives said they made contact with Cracker Barrel management Thursday afternoon and were informed of the decision.
Cracker Barrel representatives said the cost of the project was the reason for the change in plans, including preparation of the lot located on the southeast corner of the mall property right next to Chick-Fil-A.
Cracker Barrel issued the following statement to NewsChannel 12:
“Cracker Barrel Country Store identified New Bern as a growing, vibrant community that we feel would be a viable location for one of our stores. We began the development process and had received necessary permits. The decision not to continue this process is based purely on costs. Members of city government and the community within we worked were professional and gracious throughout the process. It is important to note that even though we are not developing at this particular site, we remain interested in building a store in New Bern at some time."
The City said it has also reached out to the Hull Storey Gibson group, the principal owners of New Bern Mall. The mall owners said the location is a prime site for development and they are confident they’ll find another tenant.
