PITT COUNTY -

Pitt County deputies arrested three men believed responsible for 56 car break-ins and the killing of one victim's border collie mix dog.

Dustin Hudson, 19, Christopher Trivett, 19, and Robbie Chandler, 24, were arrested Tuesday in connection with a series of break-ins that date back to April.

Allen and Lula Hudson's cars were broken into on Aug. 6, and deputies said one of the suspects not only stole $22 in loose bills and change from the cars, but also strangled 6-year-old Lady, the Hudsons' dog.

"I just thank the Lord that they caught them," Allen Hudson said. "If they killed that dog, they would have killed me. If you can kill a dog you can kill a person."

Lula Hudson said the thief left behind a headband flashlight used to see in the dark in the driver's seat of her car. Investigators took the item for evidence.

The Hudsons said the night of the break-in their cars wouldn't lock correctly, but they are not sure if that would have made a difference in keeping Lady alive.

Suspects Trivett and Chandler were placed under a $350,000 bond in the Pitt County Detention Center. Dustin Hudson was placed under a $325,000 bond.
