More than 13,000 post offices across America have had office hours cut. In North Carolina, 94 post offices will be affected. A representative from the US Post Plan, in conjunction with the US Postal Service, met with residents in Down East Carteret about the cuts there.
In Gloucester, 300 surveys were sent out to customers asking for their opinions, but only 99 people responded. Jackie Williams, Post Plan Coordinator for the Mid- Carolina District, informed customers the new hours were based on those who responded.
Gloucester Post Office, located at 310 Pigott Road, could have its office hours changed to noon until 4 p.m.
A second meeting took place at the Smyrna Post Office, located at 467 Highway 70, to discuss plans with residents in that area. The Smyrna and Cedar Island Post Offices have been reduced to six hours, while the Sea Level Post Office has been cut to four hours. The "Post Plan" coordinator says Atlantic, Marshallberg and Harkers Island will remain open for eight hours for the next two years.
Offices in Beaufort and Indian Beach have closed in recent years.
The USPS announced in May that it would be cutting hours at rural post offices across the nation in an effort to save money, yet keep services available.
