CRAVEN COUNTY -

People in eastern North Carolina are signing the petition for North Carolina to secede from the United States.

Roberta Cayton from Grantsboro signed; Betty Tapley from Havelock signed, Lucretia Whitehurst from Bridgeton signed, too.

“We’ve got too many crooks in Washington,” Whitehurst said.

As of Wednesday afternoon, more than 26,000 people have signed the petition.

Any petition that reaches 25,000 signatures on the White House website triggers a review by the administration.

Whitehurst thinks North Carolina should become its own country.

But this issue is divisive.

“I just don’t get it, I don’t get it,” Don Auth, who runs a New Bern business, said.

There is now a counter-petition which aligns with Auth’s belief that the state should absolutely not secede.

The counter-petition seeks to affirm North Carolina’s status as part of the U.S.
