The Department of Transportation announced that one lane on the Emerald Isle Bridge will be closed 24/7, effective immediately, due to construction.

The lane is scheduled to reopen on March 8 at 7 p.m.

One lane of the Emerald Isle Bridge will then be closed from Sunday, March 10 at 7 p.m. until Friday, March 15 at 7 a.m.

Both lanes will be open 24 hours per day for St. Patrick's Festival weekend.

Between Sunday, March 17 and Thursday, May 23, only weekday nighttime (7 p.m. to 7 a.m.) lane closures are expected.

No lane closures are planned for Easter week (March 29 to April 7).  All construction work are expected to be complete by May 23.

Bicyclists, runners, and other pedestrians are not allowed on the Emerald Isle Bridge during times when a lane is closed.  Wide-load vehicles, including mobile home deliveries and house movers, are also not permitted on the bridge during those times.

According to the NCDOT, flagmen will be on the bridge from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. every weekday to improve traffic flow.

The NCDOT and its contractor, Penhall Company, are working to replace bridge joints and resurface the bridge decking. Half of the bridge decking had been resurfaced as of Feb. 8.

The project is intended to extend the life of the Emerald Isle Bridge for another 30 to 40 years.
