RALEIGH, N.C. -

Family members are sharing memories of three North Carolina Army National Guard soldiers killed by a Taliban suicide bomber in Afghanistan this week.

The family of Sgt. Jeremy Hardison said in a statement Saturday that the 23-year-old joined the National Guard so that he could attend school and then design and build aircraft. Before deploying for training in June with other members of the 514th Military Police Company, Hardison was a driver for a Greensboro trucking company.

Sgt. Thomas Butler IV of Leland saw community college and the Guard as paving the way to a career as a law officer. He was 25.

Sgt. Donna R. Johnson of Raeford was a former state prison guard, a military police officer and worked in bomb training at Fort Bragg. She was 29.
