GREENVILLE, PITT COUNTY -

A man, who police say was pinned by his girlfriend's truck at a Greenville motel room, is put in a medically-induced coma.

According to family members, Joshua Pearson was rushed to emergency surgery Thursday, to remove a part of his skull and relieve pressure on his brain. Doctors induced him into a coma, and his family said they're unsure when he'll be out of it.

Pearson's girlfriend, 26-year-old Shameika Nicole Smith, of Snow Hill, appeared in court Thursday morning, on charges of attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and injury to real property.

According to police, Smith drove her car into a room at the Camlelot Inn, off Memorial Drive in Greenville, on Wednesday, March 6. The crash pinned Pearson between the vehicle and theĀ  motel wall, investigators said.

In addition to his severe head injury, Pearson's eye socket, hip and ribs were broken in the collision, and his right leg was amputated at the thigh, his family said.

Family members are by Pearson's side at Vidant Medical Center, hoping for the best.

"It's really hard, my dad and my stepmom and everybody because he was a vibrant young man and now he's fighting for his life,"s said Michelle Wright, Pearson's sister.

"He don't deserve this and he just, right now, every day is a blessing to see him still alive," said Toi Jenkins, Pearson's cousin.

Pearson's ex-girlfriend, Smith, was jailed under a $200,000 secured bond. She could serve up to life in prison if convicted of the charges.

Police said they believed the incident was the result of an ongoing domestic dispute.
