NEW BERN -

Foggy conditions forced two arriving flights to divert  from Coast Carolina Regional Airport in New Bern Tuesday night.  U.S. Airways flight 4260 from Charlotte was unable to land at 9:30 p.m.

Airport workers originally told family and friends of passengers the flight was diverted to Wilmington, but said later it landed in Florence, S.C.

“It’s better to be safe than sorry, I guess,” Peter Messina, whose wife was on the flight, said.  “If they couldn’t land safely it is best they didn’t do it.”

U.S. Airways flight 3052 from Charlotte was diverted from Coastal Carolina Regional to Wilmington about 5:30 p.m.

Airport director Tom Braaten told NewsChannel 12 that fog had been rising and falling around the airport much of the day, and said cloud cover produced a general "low ceiling" for airplanes.

Officials at Albert J. Ellis Airport in Onslow County said there were concerns of fog affecting flights. But the final three flights of Tuesday night arrived on time.

People who need to know about any possible delays in arrivals or departures are advised to contact their airline directly.
