A former East Carolina University football player is one of three people arrested in connection with an armed robbery that happened at a student apartment complex in Greenville.
ECU officials confirm Derek Blacknall is a current student at the university. He has been there since 2007. Blacknall, 23, was on the football team at the university from 2007 until 2011. He's been charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, maintain a dwelling for the sale of controlled substances and possess drug paraphernalia. He is being held under a $25,000 secured bond.
Blacknall, his twin brother Cedric and 26-year-old Christian Braxton, were arrested after the armed robbery of a woman at The Landing Apartment Complex, off Charles Boulevard in Greenville, early Tuesday morning. Authorities believe the robbery took place in the parking lot of the apartment complex.
Cedric was charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and possession of a stolen weapon. He is being held under a $75,000 secured bond.
Braxton was charged with one count of robbery with a dangerous weapon. He is being held under a $50,000 secured bond.
Greenville Police said the victim told them she was robbed at gunpoint by two suspects. She later told police she felt like she was set up by a friend when she saw the friend’s vehicle leaving the area after the robbery. She provided police officers with the names of Cedric and Derek Blacknall, along with a description of the suspect's car and a local address.
Authorities found the car, a Pontiac G6 coupe, in the parking lot at 33 East Apartments, and saw some of the victim's stolen property inside. Police said the car’s engine was still warm.
Officers obtained a search warrant for Derek Blacknall's apartment and found two handguns and marijuana inside. One of the handguns was reported stolen from Cabarrus County, NC. Authorities said Braxton was arrested after he tried to escape the apartment.
Police said their investigation in continuing and additional charges may be brought.
