A former Kinston council member was arrested on charges of exploiting a minor because investigators found inappropriate pictures of young boys on his USB drive, according to court documents.

Will Barker was arrested on Nov. 29. He was charged with 10 counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and was being held in the Lenoir County Jail on a $300,000 secured bond.

Barker became under investigation after he left his USB drive at a meeting in Fremont in Wayne County, said a town spokesperson. Barker attended the meeting to give information regarding a financial audit for Fremont.

Police said they found disturbing images of young boys on Barker's USB drive. The boys were between seven and 14 years old, according to arrest warrants.

Barker allegedly tried to kill himself before he was arrested, and an officer had to wrestle Barker's gun away from him, according to a report.

Several items, including computers and cell phones, were seized from Barker's home and business, investigators said. His first court appearance was on Monday. According to documents, Barker was considered a flight risk after his arrest and his mental state was questioned.
