GREENVILLE -

The Greenville City Council approved the area where it hopes to build a new transportation center.

On Monday, the council voted 5 to 1 in favor of site 5. That's off Dickinson Avenue on Bonners Lane, between Pitt Street and Clark Street.

The city has not yet acquired all of the land yet; however, they do own a portion of it. Officials said they must also do soil testing before they can move forward with the project.

"This is a very exciting project for our city," Councilwoman Marion Blackburn said.

However, community members had mixed reactions to the news.

"None of the sights that they suggested or researched on because it's all too close to our greater population," Deanna Kaller said.

"The police station right here. I mean they don't have to worry about no one doing nothing to it," Wilson Gene said.

The city has more than $6,000,000 in federal funding approved for the covered building for buses.

It is unclear exactly how much the project will cost.

The city hopes to have center completed in 1 to 3 years.
