Gov. Bev Perdue says she's changing the state budget and moving $1 million in efforts to prevent about 1,400 mentally ill residents of the state's group homes from becoming homeless.

In announcing the move Tuesday, the governor cited her authority to change the state budget according to unforeseen circumstances.

She hopes to keep group home residents in place through the end of January.

Perdue, a Democrat, says the Republican-led General Assembly and incoming Gov. Pat McCrory can then figure out a longer-term fix.

A legislative budget-writer last month suggested Perdue shift money within the budget to pay for the group home residents to stay.
