GREENVILLE -

An elderly man was trapped Tuesday afternoon after a tree he was chopping down fell on top of him.

This happened on Reba Drive in Greenville around 2:30 p.m. That's off B's Barbeque Road.

Neighbors told NewsChannel 12 the man was chopping down a tree that fell on a mobile home when the tree came down on top of him.

Neighbors have identified the man as Lee Price. They said he is in his 70's.  Price doesn't live in the neighborhood, according to neighbors. He was visiting his grandson, David, at the time of the incident.

Fire Captain John Maynard with the Red Oak Fire Department explained what happened.

"One of the heaviest parts of the tree stump fell and knocked him off the ladder and pinned him on the ground," Maynard said.

Maynard said they don't know how long the man was trapped, but rescue crews were able to free him and he was rushed to Vidant Medical Center. They said the tree fell on his hip area and he had possible life threatening injuries. They said he was unresponsive when emergency crews arrived.

Officials with Vidant Medical Center said Price is listed in critical condition.
