EDGECOMBE COUNTY -

A highway chase that began in Martin County on Sunday ended when a 60-year-old woman pointed a weapon directly at police, leading authorities to shoot and kill the woman, according to a news release from the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

The saga started when Melissa Anne Jenkins did not stop when a Robersonville Police officer tried to pull her over along Highway 64 at approximately 10:25 a.m., the release said.

Police and troopers chased Jenkins westbound into Edgecombe County, where her white Jeep Grand Cherokee pulled over at approximately 10:40 a.m. at mile marker 482, west of Tarboro, because of a flat tire, according to the release.

Jenkins, of Winston Salem, was the only person in the vehicle.

Authorities tried to negotiate with her, but could not convince Jenkins to surrender, the release said.

At approximately 11:45 a.m., Jenkins got out of the Jeep and pointed a weapon directly at officers, who then fatally shot her, the release said.

A Silver Alert had been issued for Jenkins on Friday afternoon.

Silver Alerts are issued for persons believed to be suffering from dementia or some other cognitive impairment.

The Winston Salem Police Department requested the Silver Alert; it was believed that Jenkins was possibly traveling to the Manteo area.

Two troopers have been placed on administrative duty pending the investigation, which is standard procedure in such situations.

The troopers are identified as W.R. Bulluck, a 10-year veteran assigned to Nash County, and S.A. Stone, a 5-year veteran assigned to Pitt County.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office, the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office, the Tarboro Police Department, and the Robersonville Police Department were involved in the incident, in addition to the NC Highway Patrol.

The SBI is leading the ongoing investigation into the incident.
