A New Bern High School teacher was arrested, for allegedly having sex with an underage student at a different high school 16 years ago.

The S.B.I. arrested 54-year-old Harrell Thach at his home in Emerald Isle on Monday, according to the New Bern Sun Journal. Thach was accused of having sex with a 14-year-old old student in 1996, while he was a teacher and coach at Perquimans County High School, south of Elizabeth City. He was charged with first-degree statutory rape.

Thach had been a teacher with Craven County Schools since Sept. 2009. He taught social studies and coached varsity softball at New Bern High School. Thach resigned as coach recently and stepped down from his teaching position on Tuesday.

Thach was scheduled to make his first court appearance in Perquimans County Wednesday morning.
