The City of Havelock is in the planning stages for a brand new sports park.
Recently, more than 47 acres of land were jointly purchased by NC Coastal Land Trust and the US Navy for more than $600,000. The City of Havelock contributed $50,000 to the cost.
Havelock officials say the land will be used for a multi-purpose sports and recreation facility.
Plans could include picnic areas, football, soccer, or baseball fields, and walking trails through the area's wetlands.
"The critical part for us will be how fast it can be developed and used by the city, especially for a park," David Smith said. Smith is the Director of Havelock's parks and recreation department.
Smith said the Navy is contributing to the park to help keep the borders free of housing developments.
Once the initial plan is developed, it will go before the board of commissioners. They will make any necessary changes. After that, the plan will go before a public forum.
The final cost of the project won't be known until the planning stage is over. However, Smith hopes a $500,000 grant will help make the new park a reality.
