Flu Season is off to a rapid start in one local county.

According to Craven County Medical officials, more flu cases in children have been diagnosed within the last two weeks than were seen in all of last year.

Flu season usually runs from October to March but most cases appear in January, according to Dawn McCabe, of the Craven County Health Department.

"We request that everybody please get your flu vaccine this year, as we do anticipate this being a very difficult year with influenza," said McCabe. "We don't typically see such a spike this early in the season."

The Health Department offers a walk-in clinic for children from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The vaccines are also free for those without insurance. Adults are also encouraged to make an appointment.

To prevent the risk of spreading the flu, Vidant Medical Center, in Greenville is currently restricting children under the age of 12 from coming into the Children's Hospital.
