Leaders of the Big Rock Blue Marlin Fishing Tournament have awarded a $75,000 grant to a local Boy Scouts group.

The grant was given to East Carolina Council, BSA, based in Kinston. The $75,000 will be used to build a land-based pirate ship at Camp Sam Hatcher in Newport, said Crystal Hesmer, tournament director of Big Rock.

The grant from Big Rock will be matched by East Carolina Council, BSA with an additional $75,000.

"An important reason for making the grant to East Carolina Council, BSA was their willingness to share in the cost of building the pirate ship," said Tom Bennett,  Big Rock's charity chairman. "This is our first experience with an organization to ask for a matching gift instead of asking the Big Rock Marlin Fishing Tournament to fund the entire cost of the project."

The pirate ship will be used primarily as a Cub Scout camping facility, according to Ben Moore, strategic planning chair of East Carolina Council, BSA. The ship will have three cabins: one for adult males, one for Cub Scout youth members and one for adult females. The deck of the ship will serve as a play area and stage for contest and other activities.
