GREENVILLE -

Pitt County schools no longer are teaching cursive writing as a separate skill.

The Daily Reflector of Greenville reported that Pitt County officials say there is no block of time available to teach cursive writing as they focus on the new standards designed to help students prepare for living in the 21st Century.

Assistant superintendent Cheryl Olmstead says schools had been teaching cursive writing starting in third grade. But Olmstead says in order to help meet the Common Core State Standards, the district is now introducing keyboarding skills in third grade.

Olmstead says a team of educators is trying to figure out where to fit in cursive writing so students will be able to have a recognizable signature. She says the district hopes to have a plan next year.
