NEW BERN -

A man from ENC rode his beach cruiser from Emerald Isle to Key West, FL to raise money for substance abuse prevention.

Dock Hooks lost his son to addiction about two and a half years ago. Hooks recently made it his mission to help fight the problem. To do that, he raised money in representation of Coastal Coalition for Substance Abuse Prevention.

A fund has been set up in honor of Hooks' son. It's called the Charlie D. Hooks Youth Leadership Award fund. Since 2010, the fund has given 6 scholarships to graduating seniors working with CCSAP’s SAPHE Youth program.

CCSAP is an organization that resides in five Eastern North Carolina counties. They are Craven, Carteret, Pamlico, Jones, and Onslow Counties.

"It's at an epidemic level in our country and around the world," said Hooks. "I want to reach out to people so they don't have to go through some of the same things my wife and I did."

Hooks is a retired Navy Seal and owns several kinds of bikes. On Hooks's Tumblr.com account, he blogged about his trip down south. He called his trip The Adventures of Dock Hooks and the "War Horse." "War Horse" is what Hooks named his beach cruiser.

Hooks said along the way, he met many people who were affected by addiction and raised an estimated $10,000.

The CCSAP is continuing to collect money for the Charlie D. Hooks Youth Leadership Award fund.
