Morehead City emergency officials confirm a person wanting to commit suicide prompted the evacuation on Arendell Street Monday. That person has been identified and arrested by Craven County deputies.
A person speaking to the distressed Marine called Morehead City Police Monday morning. Fire officials evacuated the Hampton Inn, Taco Bell, and Bistro by the Sea as a precaution.
The fire chief says someone threatened to kill his or herself with a chemical, prompting the evacuation. The individual has been identified as 20-year-old William O'Brian, a Camp Lejeune Marine from Michigan. Morehead City Police have charged O'Brian with charges of damage to property, possession of a synthetic drug, possession of drug paraphernalia, and tampering with a fire suppression system.
Chemicals and other pieces of evidence were found in the hotel room. Morehead City Police will not release the specifics of those items but say they could have created a chlorine-like gas. Police say O'Brian checked himself into the hotel Sunday.
The rest of the hotel was deemed secure, and police believe no one was at risk during the incident.
