RALEIGH, N.C. -

New Gov. Pat McCrory is commemorating the life and legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. with North Carolina state workers for the first time as chief executive.

The Republican was scheduled to attend the annual state employees' King observance midday Friday at a downtown Raleigh church.

Governors traditionally have attended the service. At last year's service, Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue lamented efforts by Republicans to require photo identification to vote. McCrory supports photo ID legislation. He's also said he wants to improve state government's customer service ethic.

A Durham pastor will deliver Friday's keynote address. The service is also when a state employee is honored for contributing to improve human and race relations.
