NC governor's candidates differ on tax changes

RALEIGH -

(AP) - North Carolina's major party candidates for governor have starkly different views on whether the state's economy is on the right track. That difference may explain why Democrat Walter Dalton and Republican Pat McCrory diverged on the scope of changes needed for North Carolina's tax system during interviews with the Associated Press.

McCrory says the state's economy is broken and can be fixed in part by overhauling the tax system, first by lowering income tax rates that are the highest in the Southeast.

Dalton said he knows people are still being hurting economically but generally sees the economy on an upward trajectory due to North Carolina's commitment to quality education and encouragement of high-tech industries. Dalton prefers a piecemeal tax approach and is against requiring sales taxes of more services.
