New Bern leaders moved forward with a plan to establish a brand for the city.
Aldermen voted Tuesday to pay nearly $50,000 for the plan; the money will go to a Tennessee firm that will create the brand plan.
“I think it’s great,” said Alvaniah Taylor of the idea to establish a brand.
The goal is to reflect a positive image of the city in order to attract new businesses, residents, and tourists, according to city documents.
New Bern City Manager Mike Epperson told city leaders Tuesday that a city’s brand is “what people say about you when you’re not around.”
The company doing the brand work, North Star Destination Strategies, will require an additional payment of nearly $35,000 before they present their final report.
Weyerhaeuser has offered to contribute $2,000 to the second payment, according to the city.
The city is being encouraged in the effort by Tryon Palace, Swiss Bear Development Corporation, the New Bern Area Chamber of Commerce, Craven County Economic Development, the New Bern Convention Center, and Coastal Carolina Regional Airport, according to city documents.
The timetable for completion of the final report is about eight months.
Leaders in Jones County's Maysville also decided recently to establish a brand.
In paperwork prepared for the project a tagline "Maysville: Naturally Welcoming" was established.
