GREENVILLE, PITT COUNTY -

East Carolina University's new athletic director, Jeff Compher from Northern Illinois, told NewsChannel 12 he's excited to work with his predecessor.

"Terry Holland and I, we don't know each other personally. But we know a lot of people amongst ourselves and throughout our professions. So I'm looking forward to getting to know him," Compher said.

ECU formally announced Wednesday afternoon that the 53-year-old Compher, a  native of Baltimore, MD, will be Holland's successor. Compher's five-year contract will begin on May 1 and he will be paid a base salary of $415,000.

Holland announced his resignation as ECU's athletic director in December. But he will remain as the school's emeritus A.D., which Compher said he's excited about.

"I'm going to rely on him and his knowledge and what he has accomplished here is just simply amazing," Compher said of Holland. "Like I said, I know I have big shoes to fill and I'm glad he's going to be here, because I can bounce ideas off of him as well."

Compher had been the athletic director at Northern Illinois for five years.  Prior to that, he served almost four years as the associate athletic director at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Compher also has ties to North Carolina. From 2000 to 2004, he served as the athletics director at Western Carolina University. Compher was also the assistant athletic director at N.C. State from 1986 to 1992.

“Jeff Compher is a proven leader in moving an entire athletic department forward,” said ECU Chancellor Steve Ballard. “He has great values, great experience, and national recognition among his peers. We are delighted he is a Pirate.”

“I believe ECU is poised for greatness and I am thrilled to be a part of the Pirate Nation," Compher said. "North Carolina has always been home for our family and the city of Greenville holds a special place in our hearts. We look forward to getting to know the student-athletes, coaches and staff as well as the many fans and supporters of ECU athletics.”

Compher is a graduate of James Madison University.
