Onslow schools offers text notifications for parents
The 37 schools in Onslow County have a new way to communicate with parents in case of emergencies. The school board usually calls and emails parents important alerts but as of this week, parents can opt to receive a text message as well.
"It will really help parents in letting them know right on the spot if there's some occurrence in school that's important," said Suzie Ulbrich, the Onslow County Schools Public Affairs Assistant.
Ulbrich said the notifications began on Dec. 4. To receive text messages to your cell phone, school officials said to text yes to the number 68453.
"I love the texts, said Noell Arrington, mom of a 4th grade student at Carolina Forest International Elementary School in Jacksonville. Arrington has signed up to receive text alerts. "I have to keep my phone on silent at work, so a text can come in as opposed to missing a phone call."
