North Carolina's governor is replacing the only black female on the state's Supreme Court with one of the two black women serving on the appeals court below.

Gov. Beverly Perdue, who leaves office early next month, announced Wednesday she is appointing North Carolina Court of Appeals Judge Cheri Beasley to the state's high court. Beasley will replace Supreme Court Justice Patricia Timmons-Goodson. Timmons-Goodson announced last month she would retire Monday.

Timmons-Goodson was the first African-American woman to serve on North Carolina's highest court.

Beasley follows Timmons-Goodson's career path in working her way up from district court judge to the Court of Appeals before being appointed to the Supreme Court by the sitting governor.
