Police said they have arrested the gunman in a fatal shooting in Kinston, the city's first homicide of 2013.
Officers arrested 22-year-old Desmond Lovell Pearson, of North Adkin Street, on Wednesday and charged him with first-degree murder and attempted murder.
According to police, Pearson shot 18-year-old Jahad Moore in the head at about 5:35 p.m. on April 12, killing the victim. Another man, 24-year-old Jacoby Riddick, was shot in the leg. He was treated at Vidant Medical Center and released.
The double shooting, which happened at the intersection of East St. and Washington Ave., was Kinston's first homicide of 2013, according to Police Chief Bill Johnson.
The twin sister of Jahad Moore, the man shot and killed, said the suspect's arrest is a relief to her family.
"We had plenty of nights we couldn't sleep," Sasha Moore said of the time between her brother's death and the arrest.
Pearson, was in possession of a stolen weapon, a Ruger handgun, on the day of the homicide, according to police. But officers declined to comment on whether that gun was the alleged murder weapon.
Pearson was already in the Wayne County Jail on unrelated charges, including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of marijuana, investigators said. Pearson is a confirmed gang member, according to authorities.
He has since been moved to the Lenoir County jail under no bond for the latest shooting charges.
