The State Bureau of Investigation has charged a former City of New Bern tax clerk with embezzlement.
Susan Rae Sutton, 28, made her first court appearance Wednesday morning. According to investigators, she stole nearly $10,000 of the city's money. The embezzlement took place from 2011 through mid-2012, authorities said.
Sutton was arrested Tuesday evening and was charged with two counts of embezzlement by a public official or trustee.
"[S.B.I. agents] have completed their investigation and developed probable cause to charge Ms. Sutton," said District Attorney Scott Thomas.
Sutton began working with the City of New Bern in 2008, according to records. But she was terminated in 2012.
Sutton has a Vanceboro address. She is due back in court in June. If convicted, she could get up to 40 months in prison, Thomas said.
