CARTERET COUNTY -

The mother of Rhonda Hagan, the woman accused of murdering her great aunt, appeared in court Thursday on charges including accessory after the fact in connection with the murder of Goldie Hall.

Phyllis Henderson Williams, 63, was arrested Wednesday by the Carteret County Sheriff's Office.  Williams' daughter was charged in September for the murder of Hall, 90.  Deputies say Hagan killed her great aunt following a dispute over money.  Hall died from blunt force trauma to the head, according to the autopsy.

District Attorney Scott Thomas said, "Mrs. Williams has been charged based upon her conduct after the death of Mrs. Hall. This case remains an active investigation and additional charges against Mrs. Hagan and Mrs. Williams are possible. Mrs. Williams will appear in Carteret County District Court on Thursday for her felony first appearance. Again, I would like to commend Sheriff Buck and his team for their work investigating this tragic death. "

Williams' husband, Rodney, spoke to NewsChannel 12's Christy Andrews Wednesday evening.  He said, "My daughter is involved, but my wife told me when all this happened, she was there. She said 'I done what my heart said, not what my mind said,'" Rodney Williams said.

Williams has been charged with accessory after the fact of murder, obstruction of
justice, and failing to report a death; these are all felony crimes. Williams was placed in the Carteret County Jail under a $300,000 bond.

"I don't understand what's going on or why she is arrested on such a high bond," Rodney Williams said. "She's never hurt anybody. She's a good woman."

Williams is not in jail in Carteret County with her daughter; Hagan was moved to jail in Craven County so the two cannot communicate about the case, Thomas said.

Williams is due in court in early January.
