GREENVILLE -

A teenager accused of robbing a man who was shot to death is now facing murder charges.

On January 2nd, Anthony Johnson was found shot outside his home on Westridge Court in Greenville.

Jahrheel May, 16, was first arrested by Greenville police on January 4th with conspiracy robbery with a dangerous weapon.

May was charged with murder and attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon on Friday; he's being held under a $1.16M bond.

According to the arrest warrant, May was trying to get money and drugs from the victim when the altercation occurred.

The victim's mother, Joyce Johnson, said she is still struggling with what happened.

"I count down the hours and the minutes looking at the clock. I can't look at it after 8 o'clock because that's the time they say he died--8:24. So, I don't look at the TV," Johnson said.

Johnson said she can't believe a 16-year-old was charged in her son's murder; however, she hopes justice is served.

"I hope he get life. He don't need to be back out on the street," she said.

Investigators are continuing to follow-up on leads in this case. Witnesses initially told police they saw Johnson arguing with two people before the shooting.

Johnson said she knows the investigation is going to take time but she appreciates all the hard work the detectives have done to solve her son's murder.

"I thank god for everything they have done. Thank God they put this together so they could get em' in a manner of time because if they hadn't of gotten nobody they might not have gotten nobody," she said.

There will be a candlelight vigil for Anthony Johnson at the Pitt County Courthouse on Feb. 7 at 6 p.m.

May's next court date is scheduled for Feb. 14.

PREVIOUS STORY:

A teenager is in jail after police say he robbed Anthony Johnson, who was found fatally shot outside his home on Westridge Court in Greenville last Wednesday night.

Jahrheel May, 16, of Grovemont Drive in Greenville, was arrested Friday afternoon, according to the Pitt County Detention Center.

Court records show May was charged for conspiracy robbery with a dangerous weapon.

According to the warrant, May "unlawfully, willfully and feloniously did conspire with 'person unknown' to commit the felony of robbery with a dangerous weapon against Anthony Antonio Johnson."

This is the first arrest made since the investigation began. Police have not yet stated whether or not May was involved in Johnson's murder.

However, Johnson's sister, Candace Parker, thinks the connection is easy to see.

"Right now that really don't mean nothing. You know, it's just robbery. If they know he robbed em' then they know they killed him too. They didn't just rob him and walk away," Parker said.

While police continue to investigate, Johnson's family has a message for the community.

"If you've got any information about my brother please let someone know. We would appreciate it especially my mom," Parker said.

May made his first appearance in court this morning. He is being held under a $100,000 dollar bond at the Pitt County Detention Center.
