The face of hunger in ENC

Thousands in our communities go hungry every day, and we're hearing from one family who needed help after an unexpected medical issue.
There is a revived beat for the Ramkissoon family of Vanceboro, but the rhythm hasn't always been so strong.
"I, I couldn't make it, I really couldn't make it," said Edward "Nick" Ramkissoon. "I needed, I needed help, we couldn't make ends meet."
It was a missed beat Nick Ramkissoon never expected - an infection in his foot. "They gave me an X-ray and told me it went to the bone, and they told me they were going to have to amputate my pinkie toe."
That meant missed work and missed paychecks for Nick, and before long, the Ramkissoon family was in trouble. "Every three months you can go to the Salvation Army, so I'd go to them every three months," said Ramkissoon. "They gave me food, a lot of food, canned food, they gave me some frozen food, cold stuff."
That food and help was made possible by donations to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. It distributed 45-Million pounds of food last year to agencies like the Salvation Army, which in turn, help families like the Ramkissoons.
"When you need financial help or you need food, you do any and everything you can to support your wife and your son - your family - and that's what I was doing."
The food was enough to keep this family moving and fed through rough times. "I finally went back to work on November 5th. The doctor said I'm OK, so here I am," said Ramkissoon.
While Nick admits he, his son and his wife could still use help, he remains thankful for the Food Bank and Salvation Army help that was there when it was so needed. "I'm grateful that they help, they help a lot. I've seen a lot of people there, they help out a lot of people."
Friday, December 7th, you can head out and help families like the Ramkissoons. Newschannel 12's Share Your Christmas Food Drive starts Friday at 9 a.m. at the malls in Jacksonville, New Bern and Greenville. It runs until 8 p.m.
